Matt Johnson’s THE THE are set to tour Australia in November 2024. The shows are part of the London post-punk project’s Ensouled World Tour, which comprises THE THE’s first shows since 2018. The 2018 run marked THE THE’s return to touring after a 16 year break. A live recording of the tour’s London show was released in 2021 as The Comeback Special: Live at the Royal Albert Hall.
THE THE will perform at Melbourne’s Palais Theatre, Adelaide’s Hindley Street Music Hall, Brisbane’s Fortitude Music Hall and Fremantle Arts Centre, Perth, throughout the second half of November. There are two shows scheduled in Sydney, but venue details won’t be disclosed until 11th December.
THE THE to perform in several Australian cities for the first since 1989
THE THE’s 2018 tour included two shows apiece in Sydney and Melbourne. The project has not played elsewhere in Australia since 1989. “We’re very excited to be coming down to Australia and New Zealand again and to be playing more cities than our last tour in 2018,” Johnson said in a statement.
“We’ve always been treated very well by our wonderful audiences in these two countries and we’re very happy to be able to see them again and re-connect to share some old and new memories.”
New music from THE THE has been scant over the past 30 years. Johnson has composed soundtracks for various films, but THE THE’s last official LP was 2000’s NakedSelf. The bulk of THE THE’s discography came out in the 1980s. The project’s debut LP, Soul Mining, was released in 1983, followed by Infected in 1986, Mind Bomb in 1989 and Dusk in 1993.
